How to Get Read Receipts in Gmail: A Complete Guide

Does Gmail have read receipts?

Only partly. Google offers a native "Request read receipt" option, but it's limited to paid Google Workspace accounts (Business or Enterprise), and only if the admin has enabled it. Even then, the recipient sees a prompt and can decline — which means most requests never return a confirmation.

How to enable native Gmail read receipts

1. 1. Sign in to a Google Workspace admin console.
2. 2. Go to Apps → Google Workspace → Gmail → User settings.
3. 3. Under Email read receipts, allow requesting receipts.
4. 4. In Gmail, compose a message → click the three-dot menu → Request read receipt.
5. 5. Send. If the recipient agrees, you'll get a confirmation email when they open it.
